You may consider installing windows seven from inside vista this way your vista will upgrade to seven without the need to backup nor reinstall any program but (expect for worst and pray to get the best)

No problem I would say getting an External Hard Drive; back up the files that YOU CARE FOR.
Oh by the way, do you have your Windows Vista installation disc?
Here to prevail on your failures.

Info here on upgrade from vista vs clean install of Windows 7

Backup your Documents, bookmarks, email contacts, pictures, in other words - anything you created... which you wish to save.

I always partition my drive, (do a search on free partitioning software) operating system on c:, then create a smallish partition on D: called Data, then I move/save all documents, bookmarks, passcards and so on to D: - this makes it easy to back them up to another (portable) drive, so they are never lost. Another partition contains all my install files, downloads and so on..

Been doing it this way for years, and have never lost data (touch wood) due to an operating system failure - if you have any problem, just format c, and there you go

Also, there is some good free image creating software out there that allows you to create an image of your c: drive once you have it just the way you want it, and you can restore the image to get back to a nice clean Windows, without overwriting any of your essential data.

Takes a bit longer at the start, but works well!!

    Hope this helps

It is better to dual boot windows 7 with vista for sometime and if possible move all the data to another partition which has no OS installed.
