Thumbs up How to find out if you have a 32-bit or a 64-bit operating system?

How to find out if you have a 32-bit or a 64-bit operating system?

Windows XP or Windows 2003 Server

    1. Press the Start-button, go to Control panel and choose Performance and Maintenance and then System.
    2. Under the General sheet you have:

    System: Microsoft Windows XP
    Professional x64 Edition
    Version 2003
    Service Pack 3

    * If you cannot find x64 edition on the second line, you have a 32-bit operating system.
    * Content may be different pending which operating system and language you have, the second line could read Home edition, Professional edition, and others. The important thing is to look for x64 edition, if this is not present then you have 32-bit.

Windows Vista / Windows 2008 Server

    1. Press the start-button, go to Control Panel and choose System and Maintenance and then System.
    2. System should say something like:

    Rating:
    Processor:
    Memory(RAM):
    System type: 64-bit Operating System.

    * If System type is 64-bit Operating system you have 64-bit, if System type is 32-bit Operating System you have a 32-bit Operating System.

    Windows 7

    1. Click the Start-button
    2. Right click Computer, choose Properties
    3. Under System, System type you will see if you have a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system

Another way is to go look in C: drive and you'd find Program Files and Program Files (x86) folders.

Nor have I... but I'm assuming because 86x is how Linux refers to 32 bit systems.

Although my PC came loaded with Windows XP Home Addition, which is 32 bit, by checking out the documentation for my processor and motherboard, I found out that I could run 64 bit, which I am currently doing with Win 7 & Linux Ubuntu in a dual boot.

Just press the "windows button/start button + pausebreak" together on the keyboad. You can see everything about your system there...
