    Paint How to fix missing or corrupt Hal.dll during boot up

    This 'fix' concerns the message
    Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll
    upon boot up.

    Fortunately there are 10 different ways to tackle this problem so at least 2 or more of the provided instructions should work.

    I was surprised to read Vista and 7 had anything in comon with this, i remember my XP days..and haven't come across anything similar in Vista or 7 but then again im not as disruptive as i used to be...

    @JayCub: I encountered it for the first time after I made a clean installation of Windows XP on my friend's computer. Never on Vista and 7 (at least for now ). Define disruptive

    Thanks Newbie Comp user for useful tuturial It is surely useful for Windows XP users, as Vista and Seven should have much lesser problems.

    How many reg keys do i think windows doesn't need today... and that looks useless so i will delete it before i made any backups and used to spend hours on dial up reinstalling updates and drivers.... the good old days...

    what took software engineers years to write Bear took me minutes to "ruin", first pc second day registry unable to recover...third day first re-install and discovery of drivers , learned never to ring Dell for help... could have been far worse, could have actually kicked the computer as boot didn't ring any bells...
