Common sense, I must say. Anything else and it'll kill your system.

Guess all you can do is use common sense and be very careful. You don't meet the min. req. for most of the antivirus softwares.

BTW you can try AVIRA free but use it as ON-DEMAND only.

Apart from common sense ~ If u would like to have it then check the top decent AV requirements at down least 64 mb ram would suffice

Also consider the free Hard Disk space?

    Sample Options

    1.AVAST! ( Antivirus )

    • For a computer running Windows® 2000/XP® Workstation (Not Server):
Pentium class Processor, 64MB RAM (128MB recommended) and 100MB of free hard disk space
    • The program itself requires about 60MB of hard disk space; the remainder of the recommended space is reserved for the virus recovery database file and its index (VRDB, also known as the "integrity database" from the previous version).

2.And also check this article by sir Raymond

Raymond.cc Blog Archives likewise already stated above

3.You might also want to check non conventional protection like sandboxie and returnil virtual system and more... ( off topic )

    Additional infos below AV

    Performance Test 2008**

Great to hear that but what version?

Avira 9 = 192 mb ram minimum not that bad for 128 ram box but the effect is on scanning speed and realtime processes

I suggest you get hold of the older version of ESET Nod32. It's very light. I am pretty sure that any latest antivirus will slow down your system tremendously.

128mb ram is close to the min req of XP itself. And if you have onboard graphics then the usable memory you have is around 40-50 mb max. Now add an antivirus and it takes about 10-20 mb. So you hardly have sufficient memory left to do your daily task. Everything will turn sluggish and a lot of hard disk activity will take place (as a result of the computer using page file).

I seriously suggest you add some ram (it's dirt cheap). If that's not possible then install some antivirus but use it only as on demand. Run full system scan everyday and run a scan on every file that you download. You should be fine.
