Over 44,000 works of Asian and American art from the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery are now available online for free public use. The galleries are the first Smithsonian museums and first Asian art museums to digitize and share their collections on the web, displaying over 90 percent of the images in high resolution and providing them all without copyright restrictions for noncommercial use.

Prior to this project, the institutions also joined Google Cultural Institute, which presents select artworks online and also features Google Art Project, the equivalent of Google Street View for museums.
